Good Ranger was founded with a simple mission: to create a protein bar that didn’t feel like a compromise. The founders were frustrated with the UK market – products were either packed with polyols, artificial sweeteners, or loaded with sugar and lacking meaningful protein. Their vision was clear: a bar that combined high protein with clean, recognisable ingredients. As first-time food start-up founders, however, they were quickly faced with the reality of UK food law. From nutrition and health claims to ingredient declarations and pack copy, the rules are complex, and even small oversights can derail a launch. They needed guidance to turn their vision into a compliant, market-ready product.
Claims and pack copy – Reviewing every phrase on pack and in marketing. Phrases like “gut-friendly” or “good stuff” might sound fun, but as there were no authorised claims to back them up, they risk being treated as implied health claims. That’s where I stepped in, helping them keep their brand voice while making sure the wording stood up legally.
Ingredients – Monk fruit had only recently been confirmed as not novel in the UK, provided it complies with the specification for “monk fruit decoctions” accepted by the UK FSA and FSAI. We made sure the declaration reflected this, including the Latin name Siraitia grosvenorii . We also checked QUIDs, allergens, and compound ingredient breakdowns.
Field of vision compliance – Ensuring weight, legal name, and durability date were all correctly positioned, as required by UK law. These are small details that can easily be missed but are essential for compliance.
Packaging & sustainability – Advising on recycling declarations for their chosen materials, making sure claims about recyclability were accurate and in line with UK guidance.
Shelf-life and safety – Supporting testing on water activity and durability, so their products not only complied legally but met retailer expectations.
Double-checks – Running a two-pair-of-eyes (2 POE) check to catch errors before print, from allergens in bold to ensuring PAL statements didn’t contradict “free-from” claims.
With my support, Good Ranger launched with full confidence in their labelling and brand story. Their packs now strike the right balance: compliant, clear, and engaging for consumers. The founders summed it up best: “As first-time food start-up founders, we were clueless when it came to the requirements and regulations regarding health claims and nutritional compliance. Georgina has been such a godsend, guiding us through the whole process… Having her support & mentorship has given us clarity and confidence as we bring a food product to market for the first time.”
Good Ranger now has a set of compliant, consumer-friendly products on the market – bars that deliver on their promise of clean, high-protein snacking without the compromises. Their case shows how the right regulatory support not only keeps a brand safe but also strengthens its identity and builds trust with consumers.
